Trout hook

What is fishing without a line and hook? Trout fishing is no exception to the rule. Hooks are one of the essential tackle accessories for trout fishing. There are a number of different hooks for trout fishing:

  • treble hooks
  • single hooks

Although treble hooks are found on most hard bait, single hooks are just as effective and much less damaging to trout.

Single hooks for trout fishing

For swimming fish

Although they are rarely found on our swimming fish or spoons, single hooks are being used more and more for trout fishing with lures. With the increase in no-kill rivers, more and more anglers are using this type of hook. The single hook is far less damaging to the fish. What's more, they are very easy to unhook. With or without barbs, they are now compulsory on many French rivers. And the trout are all the better for it!

However, a single hook does not mean more unhooked fish. If you choose a single hook of the right size for your lure, it will be just as effective as a treble hook.

For soft lures

Trout can also be caught with soft bait. To do this, use single hooks in the form of jig head. The weightheads used for trout fishing are light and thin, so that they can penetrate the fish's mouth without damaging it.

The weightheads come in a range of weights to cope with the more or less strong currents of all the rivers in France. Given the small size of soft lures for trout fishing, weightheads are often made from tungsten, a denser material than iron weight.

Triple hooks for trout fishing

These are the most commonly used for trout fishing hard bait. However, the use of treble hooks is being replaced by single hooks. Although their effectiveness is not in question (on the contrary), these hooks tend to damage trout. This is why more and more fishing federations are banning their use on many rivers,

The use of treble hooks on trout in private waters is also highly regulated. However, treble hooks are still necessary for rigging large swimming fish for which there are no equivalent single hooks.
