Depending on your playground, you will need to opt for more or less resistant equipment. Indeed, you will need to adapt differently if you use Berkley bullet pop surface lure or a popper for tuna fishing.

The different lure manufacturers

Popular and effective, the surface lure quickly won over fishermen. Its playful side and the sight fishing tend to appeal to the greatest number. A lot of manufacturers have therefore looked into the issue.

At Berkley, you will mainly find lures for freshwater. They could include the Berkley Bullet Pop 8cm surface lure. In the same Pure fishing group, you will find a choice lure with the Abu Garcia Rocket Popper 9cm

For Japan, the choice is also quite varied. The big names in Japanese fishing compete in the market with new technology and beautiful colors. The Xorus Patchinko surface lure is one of the references for French fishermen, as is the Megabass Popping duck surface lure.

Still in the land of the rising sun, you could turn your choice to a Yo Zuri surface lure, more economical, or a crawler 9cm adusta floating lure.

The choice of our French designers is not left out. You will find brands of swimming fish created in France where you will find surface lures. Adam's Pop will be part of it, as will Ioda Popper Bass surface lure.

You will understand, you will find models from all manufacturers. Even the furthest away from these practices, will offer you choice models like the savage gear 3D minnow.

How to choose your surface lure?

It is first essential to choose a surface lure because you are fishing for predators that are likely to rise to the higher layers. Indeed, you will not be able to fish for pike-perch for example.

There are several shapes and fishing techniques on the surface. We could thus divide these lures into 4 main categories: poppers, stickbaits, crawlers, and the rest.

Poppers, thanks to their hollow mouth, cause a certain sound and a splash. A popper 8cm surface lure will seduce perch as well as pike, but also sea bass at sea like an adam’s pop surface lure.

Stickbaits, on the other hand, are in the shape of a fish. Floating, they will travel in a zig zag pattern more or less lively and more or less noisy depending on the action you perform. A Zenith Z Claw Rattling or its cousin Zenith Z Claw surface lure will thus make wonderful play partners.

Crawlers, on the other hand, imitate a large insect that would evolve at the surface of the water. Its goal is to send a maximum of different signals borrowed from other models, to create an aggression reaction in the targeted predators.

Finally, there are a whole series of lures that do not fit into these boxes. We will think of propbaits and their devilish propellers, but also ploppers under the famous River2sea brand.

What animations for which lure?

Each type of lure can correspond to several animations. This will depend on the environment in which you fish, the season, the temperature or even the time of day when you practice.

Poppers like the Berkley surface bullet pop can be animated in two different ways. You can rely on stop and go usage which will make it appear like a chase. But also on longer shots making the predator believe that the fish is fleeing.

Stickbaits like the 3Dpencil surface lure can also support several different animations. They can be returned linearly and benefit from the wake left in their path.

Repeated small pulls will make them dance the walking the dog to imitate a fleeing fish, but longer pulls may avoid the suspicion of educated fish.

Crawlers and propbaits tend to also retrieve linearly. You can easily vary the speeds to give more naturalness to the swimming of your lure.

A very important point, do not neglect the breaks. They are an integral part of surface fishing. You have to imagine that predators will be attracted by the noise and flashes. They will move for this reason.

But once nearby, they will prefer a stopped fish to grab it. This will require less energy expenditure and ease.
