Spinning reel for predator fishing

A spinning reel is positioned under the rod fishing line and has a fixed spool. The rotor rotates around the spool to create well-organised windings of line. This type of reel for carnivorous fish offers a number of advantages.

For example, you can count on the use of fine line body diameters and long casting distances. It also offers greater braking capacity for very strong fishing.

These reels can be used in both sea and freshwater. They are generally less prone to wigging, even when using fine nylon or braid. After a few dozen minutes of practice, all anglers will be able to use them.

To make the right choice, it's important to determine which predator you want to target. Trout, for example, can be fished with small sizes, whereas tuna or even pike require much larger sizes. Manufacturers adapt their technologies according to what you are going to use them for.

The Magsealed system from Daiwa s Magsealed system, for example, will be an argument in favour of its waterproofness, especially if you'll be fishing in the sea. Pike-perch stalking, on the other hand, may be less demanding in terms of mechanics.

Over the next few lines, we're going to try and help you decide which model you're going to use to spool your 200m of braid. We're going to share a few

we're going to share a few tips with you, which are sure to help you with all the important aspects of making your reel a truly satisfying object.

What is a spinning reel?

This type of reel stands in opposition to, or at least seeks to distinguish itself from, models known as cast reels. On a casting reel the spool rotates, whereas on a spinning reel the spool remains fixed.

It's a rotor system that rotates around the spool. It should be combined with a spinning rod. It will allow your line to be wound thanks to its rotation and thanks to the movement of the spool from top to bottom and from bottom to top. This ensures a fairly even distribution of your line body for small reserves of 200m as well as for capacities of 500m and more.

It is positioned under the rod thanks to a reel seat that will tighten its foot. Turn the crank anti-clockwise to retrieve your rig or lure.

It will be made up of a few important components, which are present in all manufacturers. There will be a frame where the gears are located and its lubrication. You'll have a handle, which can be placed on either the right or left side without difficulty.

You will of course find the spool, which can support braid. Finally, the top section generally contains the adjustments (except for the rear brakes), as well as the rotor and the pick-up that releases the line during the casting phase.

It will always require two hands to use it, which is one of its main drawbacks, according to its detractors. The main advantage will come from its ability to use small lures or the distances reached without making wigs.

Making the right choice

There are a number of criteria to take into account if you want to make the right choice. In fact, there are many characteristics that will have to be matched as closely as possible to the species of fish you are looking for, as well as the technique used. Here are a few tips we can give you.

Size will be one of the first choices to make. You will go for small sizes to catch small fish and vice versa. Generally, 500 to 2000 are perfect for perch, chub, trout or rockfishing.

Sizes 2500 to 4000 are ideal for zander, black bass and sea bass. Sizes 4,000 and above are ideal for larger predators such as pike, catfish and tuna.

Another point is the power of the drag. It often matches the size. But don't forget to check, it can be important not to have too light a rod.

Capacity will also be an essential point, especially for certain techniques. You'll need to think about whether you'll be using braid or nylon, and the diameter you'll choose to install.

The final point is the technologies available on the different models. Don't hesitate to read our articles. They will regularly explain the advantages of choosing one model over another. This may be down to the power of the gears, or the sealing capacity of a frame or bearing.

The biggest manufacturers

The opening of borders with China over the last 2 decades has democratised production and access to Chinese production lines. As a result, many brands have developed products in their own image, flooding shelves with fairly similar products.

Some big names have nevertheless stood out, ensuring the development of new ranges, with very specific developments. Daiwa is one of these brands, with its own production plants scattered across Asia.

In Japan, you will also find a large number of brands. It's almost institutional in the Land of the Rising Sun, people create their own products, they don't copy. That's why Megabass and Shimano have such a good reputation in Europe. If you look hard enough, you'll come across a model that's just right for you, always with quality in mind.

On the American side, a number of brands are also very successful. These include 13 Fishing and Lew's, which regularly wins awards at trade fairs. Other manufacturers are also at the top of their game, with total mastery of their craft, such as Penn or Abu Garcia.

In France and Europe, there are no real manufacturers capable of producing a fully manufactured product. This is due to the high cost of labour, compared with the price of a reel on the market. Despite this, some names are very good at choosing models from Chinese catalogues, to perfectly match your requirements and European usage.
