Insect hard bait

Carnivores don't just eat fish. In fact, many of them feast on crayfish, molluscs and insects. Hard baits remain an effective lure on the vast majority of predators, but using a swimmer fish imitating an insect can be a good idea. For chub, black bass and even trout, these hard bait will do the trick.

What carnivores eat insects?

Literally, a carnivore is an animal that eats meat or raw flesh. Among fish, there are a number of carnivores: pike, zander, perch, black bass, etc. In fish terms, a carnivore is a fish that feeds by eating other fish. Some carnivores, such as black bass and trout, also eatinsects. Swimming fish have been developed to target this behaviour.

These include imitations of beetles, dragonflies and small beetles. Usually floating, they are often surface lures. They are gobbled up at dusk. In summer, when black bass fishing becomes difficult, it is common for them to feed on dragonflies. If you don't have this type of imitation, good luck luring one!

The hard bait insect, a multi-species lure

This type of lure is also effective on chub. This cyprinid occasionally feeds on fish, but also on fruit and insects. Very aggressive, they are popular with anglers who fish them with imitations of chafer, dragonfly or grasshopper.

Often active in summer, the chub is a rather moody fish that can be both gluttonous and very fussy. Most of the time, they are found on the edge of the water, behind weed beds or under trees. With a discreet approach, you can lure them to the surface by dropping your hard bait near an obstacle. Your lure will then be gobbled up as it falls and a powerful fight will ensue!
